The Office of the President continues to drive the national agenda under the leadership of H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit. This latest engagement reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to advancing South Sudan’s developmental and peace objectives as the nation prepares for its upcoming democratic transition.

Juba, April 22, 2026 — His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit has received a briefing on the outcome of a recent engagement in Malaysia, where discussions were held with a Malaysian oil company on potential investment in South Sudan’s petroleum sector, including the acquisition of shares in assets formerly owned by Petronas.

The discussions are aimed at strengthening technical capacity, improving efficiency, and attracting credible investors to support increased oil production. Officials noted that the process remains at a negotiation stage, with further engagements expected as the Government evaluates proposals in line with national priorities.

The President of the Republic was informed of the progress made, including the signing of an Offer and Acceptance Agreement in Kuala Lumpur, and subsequently authorised the Ministry of Petroleum and Nile Petroleum Corporation (NILEPET) to proceed with comprehensive due diligence and advance the necessary.

H.E. the President further directed the establishment of a High-Level Technical Committee to oversee the process, stressing that all investments must deliver clear economic benefits, promote local participation, and be carried out with transparency and accountability.
