President Kiir Reviews Telecommunications Sector Challenges, Directs Stakeholders Consultations

JUBA, June 17, 2026 — President of the Republic, His Excellency General Salva Kiir Mayardit, has directed consultations among key government institutions and industry stakeholders to address challenges affecting South Sudan’s telecommunications sector, following a briefing from the Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services.

During a meeting at the Presidency, Minister Ateny Wek Ateny highlighted the sector’s strategic importance, the Minister described telecommunications infrastructure as a vital national asset that supports economic growth, public service delivery, national security, and democratic governance.

The briefing further addressed institutional matters concerning the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the National Gateway. The Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining clear operational mandates between the two institutions in order to strengthen efficiency, transparency, and overall sector governance.

President Kiir instructed the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Hon. Africano Mande Gedima, to convene relevant stakeholders and lead consultations aimed at identifying practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing the telecommunications industry.

The President underscored the importance of a reliable and accessible communications network in supporting national development, economic activity, public services, and citizen engagement across the country.

The directive comes as South Sudan continues preparations for the December 2026 General Elections, with robust communications infrastructure expected to play a critical role in voter education, information dissemination, electoral coordination, and public participation.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with industry stakeholders to strengthen the telecommunications sector, improve connectivity, and expand access to reliable communication services across South Sudan.
