Presidential Affairs Minister, Sudanese Ambassador Discuss Trade, Security and Regional Cooperation

JUBA, June 22, 2026 – The Minister of Presidential Affairs, Hon. Africano Mande Gedima held talks with the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to South Sudan, H.E. Essam El-Din Mohamed Hassan Karar aimed at strengthening the longstanding relations and strategic partnership between the two neighbouring countries.

The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, expanding investment and trade opportunities, promoting regional peace and security, and reviewing preparations for South Sudan’s upcoming general elections.

Both sides emphasised the importance of maintaining stability and fostering constructive cooperation as South Sudan advances toward a peaceful democratic transition. They underscored the need for continued engagement between Juba and Khartoum to strengthen economic ties and support regional prosperity.

The meeting also explored opportunities to facilitate cross-border trade, encourage greater economic integration, and improve the movement of goods and services between the two countries. The two parties acknowledged the vital role that trade and investment play in supporting livelihoods and strengthening relations between neighbouring communities along the shared border.

Ambassador Karar briefed the Minister on recent developments in Sudan, noting that the country is experiencing improved stability in several areas as government institutions gradually return to their traditional headquarters in Khartoum. He highlighted the resumption of operations at Khartoum International Airport and the gradual return of commercial and official flights, describing these developments as important indicators of recovery and normalisation.

The Ambassador noted that the improving situation in Sudan presents new opportunities to strengthen economic cooperation, facilitate trade and transportation links, and expand engagement between the two countries for their mutual benefit.

Hon. Africano and Ambassador Karar further discussed the importance of maintaining peace and security along the common border, noting that stability remains essential for economic growth, regional cooperation, and the successful implementation of development initiatives.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, while expressing confidence that the longstanding relationship between South Sudan and Sudan will continue to contribute positively to peace, stability, and economic development in the region.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepening bilateral engagement and ensuring that cooperation between Juba and Khartoum remains strong in support of peace, trade, investment, regional integration, and the shared aspirations of the peoples of both nations.
