Juba, 14 May 2026 – His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Thursday attended the requiem mass for the late former Chief Justice Ambrose Riny Thiik at St. Theresa’s Cathedral in Juba.
The service brought together Government officials, members of the judiciary, family, friends, and members of the public to honour the life of one of South Sudan’s most respected legal figures.
Justice Ambrose Riny Thiik, the first Chief Justice of the Republic of South Sudan, passed away on 3 May 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya. He will be laid to rest on Friday, 15 May 2026, in his hometown in Warrap State.
Remembered as a dedicated patriot and a pillar of South Sudan’s legal institutions, Justice Thiik made significant contributions to the liberation struggle and played a central role in shaping the country’s judicial framework. He served as Chief Justice from 2005 to 2007 and previously chaired the SPLM Judiciary and Legal System from 1988 to 2004.
His passing is a profound loss to the nation and to the legal fraternity of South Sudan.
