
JUBA, June 17, 2026 — President of the Republic, His Excellency General Salva Kiir Mayardit, on Wednesday received the newly appointed IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan, Ambassador Musa Dijama Ali, for discussions focused on accelerating the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement and advancing preparations for the country’s anticipated general elections.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of the Government of South Sudan and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to consolidate peace, preserve stability, and ensure the successful completion of the transitional period.
During the discussions, President Kiir emphasized that the path forward for South Sudan remains clear and achievable through genuine partnership and cooperation.
“Our work here in South Sudan is very straightforward. If you go with us, we will go a very long distance,” President Kiir told the delegation.
The President also welcomed Ambassador Musa Dijama Ali to his new assignment, expressing confidence that he would build on the work of his predecessor, Ambassador Ismail Wais.
“Ambassador Ismail Wais has been with us for a very long time in Juba. He worked diligently and well with the people of South Sudan, and we expect the same from Ambassador Musa,” the President said.
President Kiir further acknowledged the longstanding support of the Republic of Djibouti and its leadership toward South Sudan. He noted that Djiboutian President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh has consistently respected the sovereignty of South Sudan while supporting efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region.
For his part, Ambassador Musa Dijama Ali said discussions focused on facilitating ongoing political processes and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders to support peace, stability, and the full implementation of the peace agreement. He reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to coordinating regional support for South Sudan as it moves toward elections.
The envoy also reiterated IGAD’s respect for the sovereignty of South Sudan and its commitment to carrying out its mandate in a manner that supports the aspirations of the South Sudanese people.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. James Pitia Morgan, welcomed the continued engagement of the regional bloc, describing the presence of an IGAD Special Envoy in Juba as an important contribution to ongoing peacebuilding efforts.
Dr. Pitia emphasised that sustained cooperation between the Government and IGAD remains essential for advancing the implementation of key provisions of the Revitalised Peace Agreement and creating the conditions necessary for credible and peaceful elections.
Also present during the meeting were Dr. Victoria Anib Majur, Head of Mission for IGAD to the Republic of South Sudan, who reaffirmed their support for South Sudan’s sovereignty and their commitment to working within IGAD’s mandate to support peace, stability, and the successful conclusion of the transitional process.
The meeting comes as South Sudan intensifies efforts to complete outstanding provisions of the peace agreement and prepare for elections, widely regarded as a critical milestone in the country’s transition toward lasting peace, constitutional governance, and democratic renewal.
