JUBA, July 22, 2026 — His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday received a briefing on the current situation in the Abyei Special Administrative Area, with discussions focusing on security, economic conditions, governance, and preparations for the December 2026 general elections.
The President was briefed by the Chief Administrator, Justice Charles Abyei Jok, who was accompanied by the Chairperson of the Abyei Community and member of the Abyei File, Dr. Dier Tong Ngor.
During the meeting, the delegation updated the President on the prevailing security and economic situation in Abyei, highlighting ongoing efforts to preserve stability, strengthen local administration, and improve the livelihoods of communities across the area.
The discussion also reviewed progress in preparations for the forthcoming general elections, including measures aimed at ensuring the full participation of the people of Abyei in the electoral process.
Among the issues presented was a proposal concerning electoral representation for the area, including the establishment of Abyei as a standalone constituency to strengthen local representation and enable residents to directly elect leaders dedicated to advancing the interests of the Abyei Special Administrative Area.
H.E. the President welcomed the briefing and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to preserving peace and stability across the country while ensuring that all South Sudanese have the opportunity to participate in a peaceful, credible, and inclusive electoral process. He underscored the importance of continued dialogue, adherence to the law, and coordinated efforts to address administrative and governance matters affecting the Abyei Special Administrative Area.
