JUBA, September 28, 2026 — President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the newly appointed Caretaker Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Gen. Ayor Akuoch Anok, and his deputy, Gen. Marial Chanuong, to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for South Sudan’s upcoming general elections.

President Kiir issued the directive during a meeting with the two defence officials on Monday, emphasising that effective security arrangements are essential to enabling citizens to participate freely and peacefully in the electoral process.

The President, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of the country’s men and women in uniform and strengthening the institutions responsible for protecting the nation.

The defence leaders assured President Kiir of their commitment to advancing security-sector reforms, strengthening discipline and professionalism, and transforming the national army into a unified and effective force.

The meeting comes as the country intensifies preparations for the general elections scheduled for December 22, with security forming one of the four critical pathways toward credible and peaceful elections.
