Super Eagles Soar into Morocco: Nigeria’s Quest for AFCON 2025 Glory Begins

0

As the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 looms just days away, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have completed their journey from a preparatory camp in Cairo, Egypt, to their tournament base in Fès, Morocco. The three-time champions arrived in style on December 18, 2025, aboard a chartered flight, marking the final phase of preparations for what promises to be a redemption-driven campaign. Following the heartbreak of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles are determined to reclaim continental supremacy and deliver a fourth AFCON title to a nation hungry for success.

The team’s departure from Cairo came after an intensive week-long camp that included a high-profile friendly against hosts Egypt on December 16. Despite a 2-1 defeat to the Pharaohs – with goals from Mahmoud Saber and Mostafa Mohamed outweighing Chidozie Awaziem’s equalizer – the match served as a valuable tune-up. Notably absent from the lineup was star striker Victor Osimhen, whose late arrival in camp preserved his freshness for the battles ahead.”

A Squad Brimming with Talent and Motivation

Head coach Éric Chelle, the Franco-Malian tactician appointed earlier this year, now has his full 28-man squad at his disposal. Osimhen’s arrival on December 17 completed the roster, providing a massive boost. The Galatasaray loanee, fresh from a prolific club season, has been hailed by teammate Frank Onyeka as a player “on another level” who instills fear in opposing defenders. “Victor scares them,” Onyeka remarked, underscoring how Osimhen’s presence alone alters game plans.

Nigeria’s squad blends experience with emerging talent: Ademola Lookman, the reigning African Footballer of the Year runner-up; midfield dynamos Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi; defensive anchors like Calvin Bassey; and wing threats Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, a standout from the 2023 runners-up campaign, anchors the backline.

The motivation is palpable. Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has rallied the team, declaring them “ready to conquer Africa again.” The painful World Cup qualifying exit – exacerbated by Osimhen’s absences in key matches – has fueled a collective resolve. As Onyeka noted, “It’s sad we didn’t qualify… It’s motivation for us to win AFCON and bring it back home.”

Group C Awaits: A Test of Resolve

Drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, the Super Eagles will play all their group-stage matches at the Complexe Sportif de Fès. Their campaign kicks off on December 23 against Tanzania, followed by Tunisia on December 27 and Uganda on December 30. On paper, Nigeria are overwhelming favorites to top the group, boasting superior FIFA rankings and a roster packed with European-based stars.

Yet AFCON is notorious for its unpredictability. Coach Chelle, with a record of seven wins, three draws, and two defeats since taking charge, emphasizes discipline and mental toughness. Advancing from the group is expected, but the knockout stages will demand peak performance from leaders like Osimhen, who has a personal legacy to build after a subdued goal return in previous tournaments.

The Road to Redemption

Nigeria’s last AFCON outing in 2023 (played in 2024) saw them reach the final, only to fall 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast. That near-miss, combined with the World Cup disappointment, has amplified expectations. Supercomputers rank the Super Eagles fifth among favorites, behind Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, and Algeria, but their talent pool – arguably the deepest in Africa – positions them as genuine contenders.

As the team settles in Fès for final training sessions, the focus sharpens. The Authentic Nigeria Football and Allied Sports Supporters Club (ANFASSC) has pledged unwavering backing, echoing the nation’s fervor. For the Super Eagles, AFCON 2025 is more than a tournament; it’s an opportunity to heal wounds, unite a football-mad country, and etch new chapters in Nigerian football history.

With the opening match just days away, the Eagles are poised to soar. Will this golden generation finally deliver the ultimate prize? The continent watches eagerly.
