A prominent opposition leader has leveled serious allegations against a senior government official, claiming he is deliberately undermining the fragile peace agreement between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar.
Peter Mayen Majongdit, leader of the Other Political Parties (OPP) alliance, accused Cabinet Affairs Minister Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro of “fueling divisions” between the nation’s top leaders and jeopardizing the 2018 peace deal that ended years of civil war.
“Minister Lomuro continues to create conflicts between the President and his deputy while sowing discord among communities,” Majongdit stated during a Friday press conference in the capital. The former Humanitarian Affairs Minister warned these actions threaten both peace implementation and national stability.
The opposition leader further alleged Lomuro has:
- Repeatedly interfered in OPP and other opposition parties’ affairs
- Failed in previous leadership roles, including heading the National Pre-Transitional Committee
- Been appointed to key peace implementation positions despite this track record
Majongdit also announced a new “Juba Parties Initiative” aimed at reviving dialogue among peace agreement signatories, calling for international support ahead of crucial elections.
The accusations come amid heightened political tensions following Machar’s brief detention in March – an incident that drew widespread international condemnation.
As of publication, Minister Lomuro has not responded to the allegations.
Context: South Sudan’s transitional government faces mounting pressure to implement the peace agreement fully before scheduled elections, with ongoing disputes between Kiir and Machar threatening progress.
