Juba Hosts First Training Workshop for Diplomats on International Humanitarian Law and Humanitarian Diplomacy

A specialized training workshop on international humanitarian law and humanitarian diplomacy was launched in the South Sudanese capital, Juba, organized jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the South Sudan Red Cross Society, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The three-day workshop targets thirty-six recently promoted diplomats and ambassadors, aiming to enhance their understanding of international humanitarian law and develop their skills in employing diplomacy to support humanitarian principles.

During the opening ceremony, the Director of the Institute of Diplomatic Studies emphasized the importance of integrating international humanitarian law into diplomatic practices, praising the role of the Red Cross movement in advancing this field.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Red Cross in South Sudan outlined the priorities of humanitarian work in the country, including disaster management, health and water services, protection programs, and gender equality, while noting the field challenges hindering the implementation of these programs.

The workshop is part of efforts to strengthen diplomats’ capacities in utilizing formal mechanisms to ensure respect for international humanitarian law, reflecting the country’s commitment to global humanitarian standards.
