JUBA, September 3, 2026 — His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit has bid farewell to outgoing Dutch Ambassador to South Sudan Paul Tholen, as the diplomat concludes his tour of duty in the country.

During the meeting, Ambassador Tholen said his discussions with President Kiir focused on a range of issues, with peace and elections on top of the meeting.

Tholen said both sides acknowledged the importance of peace and the need for elections that contribute to stability in South Sudan.

“Peace was a central part of the discussion,” Tholen said, adding that they also recognised the importance of ensuring that elections contribute to lasting peace.

The outgoing ambassador said public financial management was another key issue raised during the meeting.

The Dutch diplomat thanked President Kiir and the people of South Sudan for the cooperation accorded to him during his tenure and wished the country well in the future.

President Kiir wished Ambassador Tholen success in his future endeavours and reaffirmed South Sudan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
