The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in partnership with international supporting entities has handed over a new headquarters for the Central Equatoria State Election Commission as part of efforts to enhance the infrastructure needed for the launch of the country’s first potential democratic elections since independence
This project represents a practical step toward enabling the National Elections Commission to carry out its tasks in pursuit of ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral environment that helps build confidence among political stakeholders and voters
During the handover ceremony Darren Nance representative of the UN Electoral Assistance Team stressed the urgent need for political legal and financial support to enable the commission to meet its timeline warning that any delay in meeting these requirements could jeopardize the integrity of the electoral process
This step comes amid international concerns over the stumbling implementation of the peace agreement particularly regarding the electoral path while the international community and the South Sudanese government continue intensive discussions to accelerate technical procedures and avoid any further delays
It is worth noting that UNMISS continues to support South Sudan’s transitional period by providing comprehensive technical and logistical assistance including support for the National Elections Commission as part of UN efforts to consolidate stability and promote democratic governance
