Kampala, Uganda – April 11, 2025 – A Ugandan court has denied bail to veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, who faces treason charges carrying the death penalty. The decision, delivered yesterday, April 10, 2025, by the High Court in Kampala, marks another escalation in Besigye’s ongoing legal battles, which many critics describe as politically motivated.

Besigye, a 68-year-old physician and four-time presidential candidate, was charged with treason on February 21, 2025, following allegations that he conspired to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni’s government. The charges stem from alleged meetings in Switzerland, Greece, and Kenya between 2023 and November 2024, during which prosecutors claim Besigye solicited military and financial support to destabilize the state. He has been detained since November 16, 2024, after his controversial abduction in Nairobi, Kenya, and subsequent transfer to Uganda.

The court’s refusal to grant bail was based on the prosecution’s argument that Besigye, given the gravity of the charges, poses a flight risk. State prosecutors cited his history of arrests and alleged disregard for bail conditions in prior cases, a claim Besigye’s legal team, led by Erias Lukwago, vehemently disputes. “This is a clear case of persecution,” Lukwago stated outside the courthouse. “The state fears Dr. Besigye’s voice ahead of the 2026 elections.”Besigye’s frail health has raised alarm among supporters and human rights groups. Appearing in court in a wheelchair, the opposition leader, who recently ended a hunger strike, looked visibly weakened.

Calls for his release on compassionate grounds have grown louder, with Amnesty International condemning his detention as a violation of international human rights law. “The charges appear designed to silence a critic,” the organization noted.

This is not Besigye’s first brush with treason charges. A 2005 case collapsed, and earlier accusations of treachery and illegal firearms possession in a military court were dropped after a January 31, 2025, Supreme Court ruling barred civilians from being tried in military tribunals. The current civilian court case, however, keeps Besigye in Luzira Upper Prison, with his next hearing scheduled for May 8, 2025.

The denial of bail has heightened tensions in Uganda, where Besigye remains a symbol of resistance against Museveni’s nearly four-decade rule. With the 2026 presidential election looming, observers warn that his continued detention could spark unrest, especially amid speculation about Museveni’s succession plans, including the possible candidacy of his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. For now, Besigye’s fate hangs in the balance, as Uganda grapples with the delicate interplay of justice, politics, and power.
