In a historic decision marking a qualitative shift in higher education in Africa, Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba announced that his government will implement a 100% university education funding system starting in the academic year 2026, making Namibia one of the first African countries to provide completely free university education in public institutions.

The announcement came during the State of the Nation Address delivered by the President before Parliament, where he confirmed that the decision includes abolishing registration and tuition fees at all public universities and technical institutes, with students only bearing the costs of accommodation and personal supplies. He explained that the primary goal is to “break financial barriers for the talented” and empower youth in a country where youth unemployment stands at forty-four point four percent, according to the latest official statistics.

Details of the New Policy:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: The free education policy includes undergraduate students at the public universities of UNAM and NUST, in addition to seven public vocational training centers.
  • Sustainable Funding: Despite the absence of a significant budget increase, existing funds allocated for student support and university subsidies will be used to implement the plan.
  • Support Programs: The President announced a fund worth two hundred fifty-seven million Namibian dollars (thirteen point seven million US dollars) to support youth projects and vocational training programs in partnership with the private sector.
