The war that began as a US-Israeli campaign against Iran’s nuclear and missile programs has now fully ignited Lebanon’s southern border, where Hezbollah has dramatically escalated rocket, missile, and drone attacks on northern Israel. In the past 72 hours alone, the Lebanese Shiite militia has fired more than 1,200 projectiles—far exceeding daily averages seen in the first two weeks of the wider conflict—prompting massive Israeli counterstrikes that have devastated large parts of southern Lebanon and raised fears of a full-scale ground invasion reminiscent of 2006 or worse.

Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokespeople described the latest Hezbollah barrages as “the most intense since October 2023,” with rockets, precision-guided missiles, and suicide drones targeting military bases, civilian communities, and critical infrastructure as far south as Haifa and the Galilee. Sirens sounded continuously across northern Israel on March 13–14, forcing hundreds of thousands into shelters. At least 11 Israeli civilians and 4 soldiers have been killed in the renewed escalation since March 11, with dozens more injured and significant property damage reported in Kiryat Shmona, Metula, Nahariya, and Acre.

Hezbollah’s Escalation Pattern

Hezbollah’s intensified campaign appears directly linked to the progress (or lack thereof) of US-Israeli operations inside Iran:

•  February 28 – March 7: Relatively restrained rocket fire (20–80 projectiles per day), mostly Grad rockets and Katyushas targeting military outposts near the border fence.

•  March 8–10: Sharp increase following US B-2 strikes on Iranian ballistic missile sites; introduction of heavier Burkan and Falaq rockets with ranges up to 200 km.

•  March 11–14: Dramatic surge coinciding with US bombing of Kharg Island military targets and reports of degraded Iranian missile production. Hezbollah deployed precision-guided munitions (including Fateh-110 derivatives and anti-tank guided missiles repurposed for longer-range strikes), loitering munitions, and swarms of cheap explosive drones.

Lebanese sources close to Hezbollah say the group is operating under direct coordination with Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and remaining IRGC commanders, who reportedly instructed Hezbollah to “open a second front of maximum pressure” to relieve pressure on Iran proper.

Israeli Response: Destruction of Southern Lebanon Infrastructure

Israel has answered with overwhelming force. In the past four days:

•  Over 2,800 airstrikes and artillery barrages across southern Lebanon.

•  Destruction of the Litani River bridges (key logistical arteries for Hezbollah resupply).

•  Targeted elimination of more than 180 Hezbollah rocket launchers, command posts, and weapons storage facilities.

•  Strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs (Dahiyeh), Tyre, Nabatieh, and Baalbek, hitting Hezbollah financial offices, media outlets, and senior commanders.

•  Ground incursions by elite Golani and Paratrooper brigades to clear border villages and destroy cross-border attack tunnels.

Lebanese authorities report more than 420 killed (including ~280 Hezbollah fighters and ~140 civilians) and over 2,100 injured since the latest escalation began. Entire villages have been evacuated; the United Nations estimates 380,000 people displaced in Lebanon in the past week alone.

Israeli officials have issued increasingly stark warnings. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated: “If Hezbollah continues this level of aggression, southern Lebanon will face destruction on a scale not seen since 2006—possibly worse. We will not allow a repeat of October 7 on our northern border.”

Broader Regional and International Fallout

The Lebanon front has dramatically widened the war:

•  Iranian coordination – Tehran publicly praised Hezbollah’s actions as “heroic resistance” and vowed continued support.

•  Gulf states – Already under Iranian drone/missile attack, several quietly urged Washington to pressure Israel to avoid full-scale Lebanon war that could further destabilize energy markets.

•  Russia & China – Both condemned Israeli strikes on Lebanon as “disproportionate” and called for immediate ceasefire; Russia reiterated its offer to mediate.

•  United States – President Trump has given Israel wide latitude but urged restraint to avoid opening a third major front while Iran remains the primary target. US Navy assets in the eastern Mediterranean have been repositioned to support Israel if needed.

Humanitarian organizations warn of a rapidly deteriorating situation in Lebanon, where infrastructure was already fragile after years of economic collapse. Power outages now exceed 20 hours per day in many areas; hospitals report critical shortages of medicine, fuel for generators, and blood supplies.

Strategic Implications

Hezbollah’s escalation serves multiple purposes:

1.  Relieving pressure on Iran by forcing Israel to divert airpower, intelligence, and munitions northward.

2.  Demonstrating continued operational capability despite heavy losses since October 2023.

3.  Attempting to reassert deterrence after perceived weakness in the early phase of the wider war.

For Israel, the dilemma is acute: allowing Hezbollah to maintain this level of fire risks civilian morale and economic damage in the north, yet a major ground operation in Lebanon would stretch IDF resources already committed to operations against Iran and its proxies in Syria and Iraq.

As day 15 of the US-Israel-Iran war closes, the southern Lebanon theater has become the most active and dangerous front. Whether diplomacy, overwhelming Israeli force, or exhaustion on one side ends the exchange remains uncertain—but the destruction unfolding in southern Lebanon serves as a grim reminder that this conflict is no longer containable within Iran’s borders.
