The Governor of Eastern Equatoria State, Louis Lobong, has officially announced the creation of the new “Kauto” administrative area after its separation from Kapoeta East County, in accordance with an executive order issued under his constitutional authority.

The decision comes amid multiple challenges facing the region, most notably communal violence, rising cattle theft, and the impact of climate shocks, which have led to severe food shortages and displacement.

Jimmy Kilang, head of the state’s Civil Society Network, welcomed the establishment of “Kauto,” stressing that the move will enhance inclusive governance and improve the delivery of essential services, particularly for marginalized communities that have suffered from underdevelopment for years.

The new administrative autonomy is expected to accelerate responses to local crises and allocate resources more efficiently to address security and climate-related issues.
