The Office of the President continues to drive the national agenda under the leadership of H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit. This latest engagement reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to advancing South Sudan’s developmental and peace objectives as the nation prepares for its upcoming democratic transition.
JUBA, OCTOBER 28, 2026 — The President of the Republic His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit has paid tribute to the late retired General Joseph Lagu Yanga, describing him as a towering nationalist and liberation hero who dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom and lived to witness the birth of the nation he fought for.
General Lagu passed away on Tuesday, aged 95, leaving behind a legacy deeply intertwined with South Sudan’s long and arduous struggle for self-determination.
President Kiir, who is currently in Russia to participate in the Russia-Africa Summit, issued a message of condolence mourning the death of the veteran liberation figure and honouring his lifelong commitment to the cause of South Sudan.
The President’s message was delivered to the bereaved family in Juba by the Caretaker Minister of Presidential Affairs, Africano Mande Gedima.
In his message, President Kiir urged South Sudanese to celebrate General Lagu’s life and legacy, noting that the departed general had the rare privilege of witnessing the realisation of the dream for which he fought: an independent South Sudan.
The President’s tribute places the death of General Lagu among the significant moments of national mourning, as the country bids farewell to one of the figures associated with its historic struggle for freedom.
In a solemn gesture of national respect, all South Sudanese flags, both within the country and at diplomatic missions abroad, are flying at half-mast until the late general is laid to rest.
As the nation mourns, General Lagu’s passing offers the country an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices, determination, and aspirations that shaped its journey to independence. His life spanned the struggle for self-determination and the emergence of the sovereign nation he had long fought to see.
For South Sudan, the death of General Lagu marks the loss of a veteran liberation figure whose legacy will remain part of the country’s historical memory.
