Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – January 9, 2026

Burkina Faso’s military government has announced that it successfully thwarted a sophisticated assassination plot targeting the country’s transitional president, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, just hours before it was set to unfold. The revelation, made in a late-night televised address on January 6 by Security Minister Mahamadou Sana, has intensified regional tensions, with direct accusations leveled against neighboring Ivory Coast for allegedly funding the scheme.

According to Sana, intelligence services intercepted the operation in its “final hours” on the night of January 3-4, 2026. The plot reportedly involved assassinating Traoré—either by a close-range shooting or by planting explosives at his residence—shortly after 23:00 local time on Saturday, January 3. Following the leader’s elimination, the conspirators allegedly planned to target other senior military officers and civilian figures, while sabotaging a key drone-launch base to prevent rapid intervention by allied forces.

Mastermind and Funding Allegations

The junta explicitly named Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, the former interim leader ousted by Traoré in a September 2022 coup, as the architect of the plot. Damiba, who briefly ruled Burkina Faso from January to September 2022 after overthrowing the elected government of President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, has been living in exile in Togo since his removal. Authorities claim he mobilized a network of active soldiers and civilian supporters to execute the plan.

Sana alleged that the operation received significant foreign financing, including a transfer of approximately 70 million CFA francs (around $125,000 or £92,000) from sources in Ivory Coast. This funding, he said, was intended to support recruitment, logistics, and the broader destabilization effort. Neither Damiba nor the Ivorian government has issued any public response to these grave accusations.

Investigators reportedly obtained leaked footage showing suspected conspirators discussing the assassination methods in detail. Several arrests have been made, with ongoing investigations to uncover the full network.

Background: A Pattern of Instability

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, now 37, seized power in September 2022 amid widespread frustration over the previous junta’s failure to curb escalating jihadist violence. His rise made him one of the world’s youngest heads of state and a prominent pan-Africanist voice, criticizing Western influence while forging closer ties with Russia and forming the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) with Mali and Niger.

Since taking office, Traoré has survived multiple alleged coup attempts, including a major plot uncovered in April 2025 involving serving and former soldiers. The country continues to battle severe insecurity, with jihadist insurgencies displacing millions and claiming thousands of lives. Despite these challenges, Traoré retains strong domestic popularity for his anti-imperialist rhetoric and efforts to assert national sovereignty.

Critics, however, accuse the junta of authoritarian tendencies, including arbitrary detentions of military personnel, media restrictions, and suppression of dissent. Human rights groups have documented concerns over governance in the military-led transition.

Regional Tensions Escalate

The direct implication of Ivory Coast is not unprecedented. Burkina Faso’s junta has repeatedly accused Abidjan of harboring opponents and interfering in internal affairs—a charge that has strained bilateral relations in recent years. Analysts warn that these latest claims could further heighten frictions in West Africa, potentially complicating regional cooperation through bodies like ECOWAS.

Ivory Coast, a more stable and economically robust neighbor under President Alassane Ouattara, has historically hosted exiles from Burkina Faso’s turbulent politics. The absence of an official response from Abidjan leaves room for diplomatic fallout, especially as both nations navigate shared challenges like cross-border jihadism.

This incident underscores the fragility of Burkina Faso’s political landscape, where power struggles intersect with security crises and geopolitical realignments. As investigations continue, the junta has assured the public that the situation is “under control,” reaffirming Traoré’s leadership.
