This latest engagement reflects the government&#8217;s ongoing commitment to advancing South Sudan&#8217;s developmental and peace objectives as the nation prepares for its upcoming democratic transition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">JUBA, September 22, 2026 &mdash; The President of the Republic, His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, has announced that South Sudan&rsquo;s transitional government will be dissolved today, marking a decisive step toward the general elections scheduled for 22 December 2026.<\/p>\n<p><span>The President made the announcement during an expanded meeting of the presidency attended by the vice presidents, leaders of political parties, presidential advisors, ministers, and other senior government officials. The formal resolution will be announced later today in accordance with the legal requirements governing the conduct of elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>September 22 has been anticipated since the elections were last postponed. President Kiir recalled that, during the Expanded Presidency meeting of 10 December 2025, political leaders agreed to avoid another extension of the transitional period and instead move the country toward general elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&ldquo;I want to appreciate your presence, which shows your commitment and support to move this country forward as per our agreement in the expanded meeting of 10 December 2025,&rdquo; President Kiir said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>All political leaders present at Tuesday&rsquo;s meeting reaffirmed that elections remain the agreed path forward. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>President Kiir also assured the country and the international community that the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) has not collapsed. He said he had consistently communicated this position during engagements with the African Union, IGAD and the African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan, known as the C5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The President outlined progress made along the major pathways toward elections, including the legal framework, administrative and logistical preparations, security arrangements and political dialogue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the legal pathway, he said key constitutional and electoral laws had been amended to remove obstacles to the conduct of elections. He added that approximately 39 political parties had been registered by the Political Parties Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The amended legal framework separates the conduct of elections from the completion of the permanent constitution-making process and the national population and housing census. It also establishes the legal and institutional arrangements required for the December polls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On administrative and logistical preparations, President Kiir said the National Elections Commission now has a headquarters building and offices across all states. Civic education is underway, voter-registration centers have been assessed nationwide and voter registration is expected to commence soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The President further confirmed that preparations along the security pathway are continuing to support a peaceful electoral process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>President Kiir thanked the C5 leaders for supporting the electoral process. He also welcomed the position of the African Union Peace and Security Council, which acknowledged the Government&rsquo;s commitment to conducting credible elections in December 2026 during its 1264th meeting in August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&ldquo;It is today, on this date of 22 September 2026, that I want to announce to you that the Government will be dissolved today, as per the legal requirements governing the conduct of every election,&rdquo; the President said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The announcement comes exactly three months before the election date declared by the National Elections Commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Political leaders attending the meeting welcomed the decision and expressed their commitment to the electoral transition.
