Nyieth, Chairman of the Patriotic People’s Party (PPP)

South Sudan’s future is inextricably linked to the stability and prosperity of the wider East African region. As a member of the East African Community (EAC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), South Sudan has both opportunities and responsibilities in the regional context.

The Patriotic People’s Party believes that South Sudan must embrace regional cooperation as a cornerstone of its foreign policy. Integration into East African markets, infrastructure networks, and security arrangements offers significant benefits for our nation’s development.

Economically, the EAC presents enormous opportunities for South Sudan. Access to a regional market of over 300 million people can stimulate investment, create jobs, and reduce the cost of goods for consumers. The PPP supports the full implementation of EAC protocols on the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people.

Infrastructure connectivity is particularly important. The proposed standard-gauge railway connecting South Sudan to Kenyan ports, the development of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor, and the expansion of road networks linking South Sudan to Uganda, Sudan, and Ethiopia are all critical projects that the PPP supports.

On security, regional cooperation is essential for addressing shared challenges including cross-border armed groups, the activities of the Lord’s Resistance Army in the region, and the conflict in Sudan that continues to affect South Sudanese communities along the border. The PPP supports enhanced intelligence-sharing and joint security operations among regional states.

Water security is another area where regional cooperation is vital. South Sudan’s share of the Nile waters is a matter of national sovereignty, but the PPP believes that cooperative management of the Nile Basin is preferable to confrontation. We support dialogue among riparian states that balances upstream and downstream interests.

The PPP also recognizes the important role that regional partners have played in South Sudan’s peace processes. IGAD and the African Union have been instrumental in mediating between conflicting parties. While the PPP appreciates these efforts, we also believe that South Sudan must take greater ownership of its peace and reconciliation processes.

As we build our nation, we must remember that South Sudan cannot thrive in isolation. Regional cooperation is not a sign of weakness but a strategy for strength. The PPP is committed to building constructive relationships with all our neighbors and regional partners.

🇸🇸 Stay Informed About South Sudan’s Future

Follow the Patriotic People’s Party and Juba Global News Network for daily updates on South Sudan’s political transition, development, and the vision for a prosperous nation.

▶ Subscribe on YouTube
👍 Follow on Facebook

By Dr. Joseph M.
