JUBA, June 17, 2026 — President of the Republic, His Excellency General Salva Kiir Mayardit, on Wednesday received a comprehensive briefing on major transport infrastructure and development projects from the Minister of Transport, Hon. Rizik Zakaria Hassan and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Hon. Paul Dhel Gum.<\/p>\n

The meeting highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to modernise the country’s transport sector and accelerate strategic projects aimed at improving connectivity, safety, efficiency, and service delivery across South Sudan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Minister Rizik provided updates on a broad range of initiatives currently being implemented by the Ministry, including reforms intended to strengthen policy, regulatory frameworks, and institutional capacity within the transport sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the key projects discussed was the recently launched Air Traffic Management System, a landmark initiative designed to enhance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of South Sudan’s airspace operations. The Minister noted that the project represents a major step forward in strengthening the country’s aviation infrastructure and improving oversight of national airspace.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Minister also briefed the President on progress in the expansion of the Wau Airport terminal, a project expected to increase passenger handling capacity, improve services, and support growing commercial and economic activity in the greater Bahr el Ghazal region.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the briefing covered several ongoing infrastructure and transportation development programs aimed at improving mobility, facilitating trade, strengthening regional connectivity, and supporting economic growth throughout the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

President Kiir welcomed the progress made and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in modern transport infrastructure as a key driver of national development. He emphasised that improved transportation networks remain essential for connecting communities, expanding economic opportunities, facilitating trade and investment, and enhancing access to public services.<\/span><\/p>\n

The President encouraged the Ministry to maintain momentum in the implementation of priority projects and continue working to strengthen transport systems that support the country’s long-term development objectives.<\/span><\/p>\n

The meeting reflects the government’s broader commitment to infrastructure development as part of ongoing efforts to stimulate economic growth, improve service delivery, and advance national transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n
