JUBA, JUNE 18, 2026 — President of the Republic, His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, on Thursday held talks with the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, to review progress in the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement and South Sudan’s preparedness for elections scheduled later this year.<\/p>\n
Former Tanzanian President, H.E. Jakaya Kikwete said his visit forms part of the African Union’s continued engagement with South Sudan and its efforts to support the country’s democratic transition.<\/span><\/p>\n Kikwete noted that while challenges remain, significant progress has been achieved in implementing the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).<\/span><\/p>\n “There have been challenges, but there has also been substantial progress in the implementation of the peace agreement.” He said. <\/span><\/p>\n The AU High Representative emphasised that peace and stability remain the foremost priorities of the African Union and reiterated the organisation’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s efforts to consolidate peace and achieve a successful democratic transition.<\/span><\/p>\n Kikwete disclosed that he had held extensive consultations with African ambassadors accredited to South Sudan, representatives of the Troika, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), political stakeholders, and other partners. Based on those engagements, he said there is growing consensus that elections represent the appropriate path forward for the country.<\/span><\/p>\n He further affirmed that the African Union stands ready to support South Sudan throughout the electoral process and in the implementation of remaining transitional tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n President Kiir welcomed Kikwete and expressed appreciation for his continued commitment and diligent efforts in supporting peace and stability in South Sudan.<\/span><\/p>\n “I am always pleased to welcome you. Your visits provide an important opportunity for us to update you on the progress we have made in implementing the peace agreement and advancing our transition,” President Kiir said.<\/span><\/p>\n The President reiterated that South Sudan remains committed to implementing the peace agreement and noted that the Transitional Government has already undertaken amendments to the agreement in consultation with the parties to facilitate the electoral process. He further informed the AU delegation that preparations are underway for an inter-party dialogue aimed at building consensus on key electoral modalities and ensuring inclusive participation in the democratic process.<\/span><\/p>\n H.E. President Kiir stressed that South Sudan is a sovereign nation governed by the rule of law and maintained that the Executive will not interfere in judicial processes, which remain the responsibility of the competent legal institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n The President also noted that the overall security situation across much of the country remains stable and conducive to the ongoing preparations for elections.<\/span><\/p>\n On electoral preparedness, the President <\/span>informed the delegation that the National Elections Commission has already received resources necessary to commence its work and is currently preparing to roll out civic and voter education activities nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n The President further stated that the Government of South Sudan remains open to dialogue and engagement with all those committed to peace, emphasising that the country’s doors remain open to any South Sudanese seeking to return home and contribute constructively to the nation’s future.<\/span><\/p>\n “Our position remains clear: anyone willing to come home and engage in dialogue for peace will be welcomed.
